One of the most charismatic figures of his generation, Joaquin Torres-Garcia (1874-1949) is regarded today as one of the most important and influential early twentieth century artists to have emerged from Latin America. Celebrated for his work as a modernist painter, teacher, and art theorist, Torres-Garcia is also known for breaking new ground in the realm of wooden constructions. Beginning in the late 1920s, he adapted the Neo-plasticism style of his colleagues Mondrian and Van Doesburg into a new 3-dimensional concept called 'maderas', he then further adapted this concept to create educational toys for young children.
