Cassandra Clare

Biography

An American author of young adult contemporary fantasy fiction, Cassandra Clare is best known for The Mortal Instruments saga, set in a richly imagined world full of monsters, adventure, romance and intrigue. The dark and twisting high fantasy novel Sword Catcher is her first foray into adult fiction. Born in Iran in 1973, Judith Rumelt’s childhood was spent travelling the world with her family; by the time she was ten, she had lived in three different countries and spent a month trekking in the Himalayas. She moved to Los Angeles to attend high school, and adopted the pen name Cassandra to write stories to amuse her classmates. Her early writing career involved working for celebrity magazines and tabloid newspapers - work she is keen never to return to - and in 2004, she started work on the first of The Mortal Instruments saga, City Of Bones, inspired by the urban landscape of Manhattan. Quitting her job in 2006 to focus on writing full time, City Of Bones was published in 2007 and became an instant New York Times bestseller. Set in modern-day New York, this alternate, shadowy world is populated by paranormal beings, mythological creatures and demons, a world Cassandra Clare returns to in future series, including The Infernal Devices and The Dark Artifices. Offering an irresistible mix of a brave, confident and loyal protagonist, immersive storytelling, epic world-building, breathtaking adventure and gentle romance, Cassandra Clare is a master of creating a world every reader wants to become part of.
