Media Reviews
A rare read, which is both disturbingand hilarious. Definitely worth having on your bookshelf * Morning Star *
Brilliant... at once pathetic, tragic and wonderfully entertaining * Morning Star *
Praise for Charlie Williams: Gloriously funny stuff and so original that other writers must be gnashing their teeth in jealousy * Guardian *
To create a world with a genuinely dark and disturbing heart is tricky enough ; to do this and be funny at the same time is nigh on impossible, but Charlie Williams pulls it off. Deadfolk was a fantastic debut and Fags and Lager is even better. Royston Blake is a truly original anti-hero, and reading this latest misadventure is like being smashed in the funny bone by a lump hammer * Mark Billingham *
Charlie Williams's storyline is a hallucinogenic trip worthy of the late Syd Barrett's attention... A fascinating and engaging tale, this deserves attention for its sheer originality and author Williams's complete disregard for a conventional plot * Sunday Business Post *
Full of entertaining nonsense... Williams weaves a tight plot, his pacing and ear for dialogue pitch perfect * Big Issue *
Stairway to Hell plunges us into a mad, alternative rock 'n' roll universe, where ordinary people are possessed by the souls of past rock stars... The rock 'n' roll jokes come faster than Zep riffs * Irish Times *
Quite simply hilarious... Bottom line, Stairway to Hell is a barrel of fun, probably best read to a soundtrack of The Song Remains the Same and Ch-Ch-Changes * Black Static *
Charlie Williams' committedly silly novel about the eternal Faustian pact of pop stardom is difficult to dislike... at its best it reminded me of Ian Hunter's Diary of a Rock'n'Roll Star -- Andrew Collins * Word Magazine *
A novel as barmy as this one is hard not to love, especially when Rik and a grizzled band of the halt and the lame attempt to take back the music from the greedy swill-masters behind The X Factor (what they do to Simon Cowell is worth the price of the book). Inspired lunacy for music fans. * Booklist (USA) *
