Description

This text offers an explanation of how the digestive system works, how it can go wrong and the symptoms which may be experienced when it does. It is designed to give the reader a better understanding of what symptoms to look for and when to seek professional help. Starting with a "tour" through the digestive system itself, the first section of the book helps the reader to understand their complaint. It outlines all the common symptoms and what may be causing them, and then describes the specific digestive disorders and conditions recognised by both conventional and alternative healthcare providers. The section concludes with information on different tests that can be used in the diagnosis of digestive ailments. Information is offered on a whole range of medicines, treatments and therapies from both the conventional and complementary fields, ranging from over-the-counter remedies to a visit to a nutritionist or homeopath. The book also offers advice on broader lifestyle issues that may help or hinder recovery, such as daily diet, exercise and stress-relief.
