Description

Sound healing is not only an ancient practice, it’s also a key trend in modern wellness: it’s re-emerging as an extremely effective solution for alleviating both physical and mental pain.

From the boom in ASMR videos to high-end spas offering crystal singing bowl sound baths, the word is out that sound vibrations can help us:

  • sleep better
  • stress less
  • alleviate anxiety and depression
  • relegate our nervous systems
  • increase creativity, focus and clarity

In this holistic health handbook, well-known sound healer Lyz Cooper and founder of The British Academy of Sound Therapy will introduce us to the power of sound, offering not only stories drawn from experience but also an understanding of the neurological and medical studies that are uncovering exactly how these ancient practices work on the human body. Add to that over 40 'pause to listen' exercises throughout, ranging from meditations in nature to vocal practices, for how to incorporate sound into your wellness practices and you have the definitive guide to this popular and growing area of wellness.

Author's Bio

Lyz Cooper began working with therapeutic sound and music in 1994, when a period of ill health prompted her to leave a fast-paced career and explore new ways of supporting wellbeing. During this time, she discovered the power of her own voice to regulate her system and reduce symptoms, igniting a lifelong exploration into the relationship between sound, consciousness and health.

She is the founder of The British Academy of Sound Therapy (BAST) and the developer of the 7Rs (a Reflective Process) and the BAST Method. These approaches are now used by practitioners and facilitators internationally. Her research focuses on the ability of sound to induce altered states of consciousness (ASC) and the therapeutic benefits that can arise from these states including reduced pain and anxiety, improved mood state, nervous system regulation and insight.

Lyz holds Master’s degrees in Applied Music Psychology and Education, and has contributed to studies on sound-induced ASC. She is also the sound therapist behind the ambient track Weightless by Marconi Union, widely cited as one of the most relaxing pieces of music recorded, and founder of LifeSonics®, a streaming platform offering therapeutic soundscapes for daily wellbeing.

Her work sits at the intersection of science, creativity, and reflective practice.

Rosanna Morris has worked in the realm of print for over ten years. She first got excited about relief print at the age of 18 during her foundation diploma at the Bristol School of Art. During the course she took a trip to Paris where she encountered inspiring large-scale street art around the city. Once home, she wanted to make her drawings big and began carving huge life-size woodcuts of British farming and pasted them on abandoned walls around the city.

She went on to study Illustration at Camberwell College of Arts, where she developed her own unique style, evoking the traditional feel of British Wood Engravings within the aesthetic of contemporary illustration.
