Since moving to the city in 1978, he has combined a career in the NHS with and honorary appointments at the University of Birmingham with photography. His photographic exploration of Birmingham began in 1990, leading to thirteen books capturing its changing landscape in photos with an infromative accompanying text.

His first book, Positively Birmingham, became a popular coffee table title, running to five editions.
