Description

As dramatized on BBC Radio 4
Winner of the Miles Franklin Award
'Magnificent' - The New York Times

Cloudstreet is Tim Winton's great family drama, a twenty-year story of life and love, full of boisterous energy, joy and heartbreak. His visceral evocation of the Australian landscape is nowhere more extraordinary than in this classic.

No. 1 Cloudstreet: a broken-down house on the wrong side of the tracks, a place teeming with memories, with shudders and shadows and spirits. From separate catastrophes, two families – the Pickles and Lambs – flee to the city and find themselves thrown together, forced to start their lives afresh. As they roister and rankle, the place that began as a roof over their heads becomes a home for their hearts.

With an introduction by Philip Hensher

Media Reviews

A generous watery epic . . . Winton is just one of the best * Independent *
Imagine Neighbours being taken over by the writing team of John Steinbeck and Gabriel García Márquez and you'll be close to the heart of Winton's impressive tale * Time Out *
Brimful of wonderful characters and radiates with the warmth and generosity of the human spirit and the pathos of individual lives. Never sentimental Winton is a masterful storyteller with an enormous heart -- Mariella Frostrup
A fragmented, hilarious, crude, mystical soap opera. In a rich Australian idiom, Winton lets his characters rip against an evocation of Perth so intense you can smell it * Sunday Telegraph *
He is a novelist, a great one, because against all evidence and odds, he reminds us what it is to be human, and reminds us to be proud of our humanity . . . Winton is a one-man band of genius * Los Angeles Times *
Nothing short of magnificent . . . A wonderful read * New York Times *
