Description

Burnley is a town of contrasts. It is situated in a pleasant valley, surrounded by moors teeming with heather and wildlife. The town itself is dominated by the ever-present Pendle Hill, which provides one of the finest backdrops to any settlement in England. The area around Burnley is wonderful walking country. The original route of the Pennine Way passes through the borough, as does the Pennine Bridleway, and there are 6 splendid parks to enjoy, one of them over 600 years old. The town, though it has a long and fascinating history, is relatively new. It is the product of the unregulated Industrial Revolution of the nineteenth century, which was responsible for social, economic and environmental excesses. Burnley From Old Photographs charts the town's history through a fascinating selection of old photographs, prints, postcards and advertisements to show what life was like for Burnley's past residents, and to highlight the celebrations and the struggles this picturesque, bustling town witnessed. Written by local historian and longstanding member of the community Roger Frost, this book will inform readers not only where Burnley has come from but also the direction that Burnley hopes to take in the future.
