Description

An indispensable planning manual for all sailors and motorboaters yearning to cruise home waters.

Sailing around Britain and Ireland may be a challenge that requires a great deal of preparation, but it is an extremely rewarding experience without taking you too far from home. The coastline is beautiful and it doesn't require extended time off work to embark on an adventure.

This planning bible offers practical insights into every aspect of circumnavigating, covering: when to leave, choosing direction of travel, what charts and equipment are needed, how much it is likely to cost, possible routes (via canals or 'the long way'), likely pitfalls during the journey, and the types of running maintenance that might be required. Experienced offshore sailor Sam Steele includes ‘ten of the best’ castle anchorages, wildlife encounters, picturesque marinas and many more suggestions to help boaters make the most of their trip.

Packed full of maps and photos, this revised third edition provides up to date information on local facilities and marinas, finances, safety and navigation. It also includes a new chapter on greener circumnavigation, with advice on how to achieve a lighter footprint for your cruise.

This is the perfect guide for boaters planning as well as dreaming of one day circumnavigating Britain's beautiful islands, whether fully crewed, short-handed or singlehanded.

Media Reviews

This is a comprehensive guide to sailing (or motor boating) round Britain. * Sailing Today (review of previous edition) *
There is something to learn on every page. Must be one of the best available practical guides for cruising. * Lymington Times (review of previous edition) *
Clear writing, stunning imagery and useful graphics make for a manual at once informative and entertaining. The book is an invaluable guide to anyone thinking of cruising the UK * Yachting Monthly (review of previous edition) *
Brimming with practical advice interspersed with absolutely stunning photographs … the book has ignited my belief that the circumnavigation of the UK and Ireland is not only truly achievable, but also essential for the cruising sailor. * Cruising Association (review of previous edition) *
Packed with invaluable, advice on planning, preparation, and maximising your experience … this guide gives you the confidence to set sail * Practical Boat Owner *
This is just so much more than a pilot book. The information on harbours, headlands and the rest is rock solid, but there’s more useful information on running a boat here than in many a textbook that specialises in nothing else. Sam is a grown-up sailor of wide experience. It shows, and even an old salt like me found plenty in its beautifully presented pages to top up my knowledge banks. * Tom Cunliffe *
If you plan to sail or motor around the UK and Ireland, this excellent and well-written guide should be your constant companion and go-to resource. * Practical Boat Owner, Best New Releases *
