This book chronicles the various wars that have affected East Devon through the centuries, from the invasions of Celts and Romans, Saxons and Danes, to the First and Second World Wars. It is only in more recent times that we have had the benefit of photography, so naturally the emphasis of this books is on wartime events of the last hundred years. During the Second World War Devon was one of the most military active counties in the United Kingdom. Exeter and Plymouth were blitzed, while the rest of the county suffered from bombs, landmines and shells. Despite all this, inhabitants endeavoured to carry on their everyday lives as normally as possible. Ted Gosling and Roy Chapple know East Devon very well, and their fascinating photographs will be of interest and value to everyone who knows the area, recent arrivals and older residents alike.
