Description

The definitive guide to the birdlife of Mongolia.

Mongolia lies at the heart of Asia, bridging the vast Siberian taiga forests of the north and the world’s coldest deserts to the south. It encompasses great mountain ranges, extensive steppes and deserts, and pristine rivers and lakes. Large and sparsely populated, Mongolia harbours a rich avifauna including an array of globally rare and local species. For dozens of steppe species and many others, Mongolia really is the place to go.

This beautiful guide by Gombobaatar Sundev, Mongolia's most famous ornithologist, and Christopher Leahy provides in-depth details for 502 species, including all residents, migrants, and vagrants. The authoritative text covers identification features, along with voice, habitat, behaviour and status, and is accompanied by 112 superb plates depicting every species and many distinct plumages and races. Detailed maps – a cartographic feat never before attempted for Mongolia – accompany the text.

Birds of Mongolia is an indispensable guide for birders, adventurers, and all those interested in this central Asian nation.

Media Reviews

Birding in Mongolia still feels like a work in progress and for the pioneering birder there are many exciting discoveries still to be made. It's a brilliant country, with lovely people and now a great book to help those visiting and to inspire the next generation of local birders! * Birdwatch *
Birds of Mongolia is a very welcome book and the only comprehensive field guide to the birds to Mongolia. It is fit for purpose and undoubtedly the guide that any birder visiting Mongolia should turn to first. I look forward to using it on my next visit! * Frank Lambert, The Birder's Lbrary *
In short, this volume has everything you could want in a field guide. * Travels with Birds *
I quickly became pleasantly immersed in the book, spent an hour going through it page by page, and realized I must share it with The Birding Wire readers ... If you’re looking for a good novel, consider opting instead for the Birds of Mongolia; I strongly recommend it. * The Birding Wire *
