Cats and dogs may not make the easiest of bedfellows but both species always have been close companions of man and so it is not surprising that both feature frequently in illustrations found on medieval manuscripts, as well as subsequent publications through the centuries. The British Library Diary 2013 features the very best of cat and dog illustrations from literature and art from earliest times to the early twentieth century. The images show cats and dogs separately - cats in witchcraft, Egyptian cats, cats in nursery rhymes (Ding Dong Dell) and fairy tales (Puss in Boots) and dogs from Aesop's Fables, Robinson Crusoe, the Wizard of Oz (Toto) and Old Mother Hubbard - as well as together, some living harmoniously while others engaging in more lively interactions, with illustrations by Edward Lear, Bewick, Cecil Aldin and others.
