Peter Whelan was born in the Potteries in 1931. His plays include Captain Swing (RSC The Other Place , Stratford, 1978), The Accrington Pals (RSC Pit, London, 1981), Clay (RSC Pit, London, 1983), The B right and Bold Design (RSC Pit, London, 1991), The School of Night (RSC The Other Place, Stratford, 1992), Shakespeare Country (Little Theatre Guild, 1993), The Tinderbox (New Vic, Newcastle-under-Lym e, 1994), Divine Right (Birmingham Rep, 1996), The Herbal Bed (RSC The Other Place, Stratford, 1996, West End and New York. Best Play: Lloyds Private Banking Award. Olivier Award nomination.), Overtur e (New Vic, Newcastle-under-Lyme, 1997), Nativity (with Bill Alexander, Birmingham Rep, 1999) and A Russian in the Woods (RSC 2001).
