He began his career in his native Australia, working as a messenger boy for Frank Packer's Consolidated Press, before moving to Melbourne to work for Keith Murdoch's Herald. From there he came to England, via India, to begin a long career with the Sunday Times. There he was involved in many major stories, including the Six Day War, thalidomide, the Profumo scandal, political corrup-tion and the Hitler diaries fiasco. An expert on espionage, he was one of the few journalists to get access to Kim Philby in Russia.
