Suzanne Collins

Biography

Named by Time magazine as one of the most influential people in 2010, Suzanne Collins is the award-winning author behind the hit The Hunger Games series. Born in 1962 into a military family, Suzanne Collins moved around a lot as a child. In 1989, she earned a Master of Fine Arts for dramatic writing from the New York University Tisch School Of The Arts. After graduating, she started working on children’s television shows for Nickelodeon and PBS, earning a Writer’s Guide Of America nomination in 2001. After meeting an author, she was encouraged to try writing a children’s book of her own. Inspired by Alice In Wonderland, she imagined what could be found if you fell down a manhole rather than a rabbit hole. The answer was The Underland Chronicles, a five-part fantasy series set in a subterranean world beneath New York City. In 2008, the first in her next series was published: The Hunger Games. Two sequels, Catching Fire and Mockingjay, quickly followed, with the series selling millions of copies, topping bestseller charts around the world, and being adapted into a blockbuster film franchise. A prequel, The Ballad Of Songbirds And Snakes, was published in 2020. An author who doesn’t shy away from the darker aspects of life, Suzanne Collins encourages her young adult readers to have the courage to stand up for what’s right. Set in dystopian worlds, Suzanne Collins’ novels tackle familiar issues in an unfamiliar setting, with relatable characters who try their best but still sometimes fail, with plenty of action, adventure and romance along the way.
