Milly Johnson

Biography

Poet, after-dinner speaker, columnist and professional joke writer… Milly Johnson wears many caps, but she’s best known as an author of contemporary romantic fiction. Yorkshire born and bred and proud of it, Milly Johnson has lived in the county her whole life, apart from three years when she attended university in Exeter. A passionate reader from a young age, she had dreams of becoming a writer but thought it unrealistic, instead embarking on a career as an accountant, the first of many as she struggled to find her niche. While working an array of jobs, from banks to mills, she wrote jokes, poems and verses for greetings cards to supplement her income. After being made redundant, she set up her own company as a professional joke writer, selling them to various greeting card companies. Although she loved her work, she still felt there was something missing. It was only when she’d turned 40, having married, divorced, moved and had children, that she decided to use her own life experiences and start writing the novel she’d dreamed of writing since she was a child. Her first novel, The Yorkshire Pudding Club, was published in 2007. Since then she has written over 20 novels and won numerous awards, including the Romantic Novelists’ Comedy Award, the Yorkshire Society Award for Arts & Culture, the Goldsboro Books Award For Romantic Contemporary Fiction, and was awarded the Romantic Novelists’ Association’s Outstanding Achievement Award in 2020. Moving and heartfelt yet witty and humorous, Milly Johnson writes contemporary romances that also explore the complexities of female relationships and the importance of being true to yourself.
