David Nicholls

Biography

Born in 1966, British novelist and screenwriter David Nicholls is best known for his phenomenally popular modern romance novel One Day, which has been adapted into both a film and a Netflix series. During his twenties, David Nicholls worked as an actor, but, as he admits himself, lacked the skills needed to actually act. He instead tried his hand at screenwriting, at which he proved much more successful, contributing episodes to the TV series Cold Feet and earning himself a Best New Writer nomination at the British Academy Television Craft Awards in 2000. His first novel, Starter For Ten, was published in 2003 (and was adapted into a hit film starring James McAvoy in 2006), with The Understudy published the following year. His breakout hit, One Day, was published to critical acclaim in 2009, and charts the journey of a young couple on one day of the year over the course of 20 years. It was named the Galaxy Book Of The Year in 2010, with a film and Netflix adaptations following in 2011 and 2024 respectively. In You Are Here, published in 2024, the lives of two people are once again changed forever after a chance encounter. The master of contemporary romance, David Nicholls’ novels explore the everyday, ordinary moments that make life so extraordinary.
